Saturday, August 10, For those urbanites who would claim that many among the hundreds of animals processed weekly at livestock sales barns across Ontario are mistreated, Dr. Geoff Cochrane would beg to differ. For the past 27 years, he's been the man in charge of health and safety at Ottawa Livestock Exchange, a mismatched collection of barns just off Hwy.
It's like a s movie set, steeped in atmosphere, the barns and the people inside them seemingly ready for the cameras to roll. The exchange is big and rambling, with exposed wooden structural supports and narrow passageways on two levels, lit with dozens of bare bulbs strategically placed along the way.
A Russell-based veterinarian, Cochrane patrols the pens and passageways every Monday, one of two weekly sales days. Cochrane keeps an eye on the animals under provisions of the Livestock Community Sales Act that oversees consigned sales at 26 licensed Ontario livestock auction barns. Policed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the legislation is intended to provide confidence in an orderly market, disease control, monitor humane handling of livestock, and ensure financial stability of the operator.
The act and its regulations authorize veterinarians and inspectors to examine livestock up for sale, the facilities and handling techniques, ensuring that animals are marketed in compliance with mandated provincial programs and codes of practice.
For the most part, he says, things run smoothly with few incidents of very sick animals or mistreatment. Fitting right in, the Russell vet roams the holding pens carrying a small prod to separate animals. Cochrane stays on the job because he loves the atmosphere and enjoys the colourful characters and animals that populate the place.
Co-owner auctioneer, Steve Spratt who grew up at Leo's, says sales of about 90, head a year make it one of the biggest sales barn by volume in Ontario. In recent years, sales of cows have dropped while sales of goats and sheep have risen, observed Spratt who personally handles Thursday cattle auctions.
There are no restrictions on who can take in the action or bid on an animal in one of three rings. While there are some children in the stands, the complex isn't set up to accommodate families. On a recent Monday, hundreds of animals passed through the system, seamlessly, with no two or four-legged critters getting hurt or even overly distressed along the way.
There was a constant procession of cows, calves, bulls, goats, lambs, sheep, even a few llamas and donkeys, all of them going under the gavel, most sold on a per-pound basis. A substantial percentage of the buyers is obviously of ethnic origin favouring fresh goat and lamb. One group gathered in the grassy yard between the sales barn and an old house containing a restaurant was down on its knees, praying to Mecca.
