I am a teacher and don't have terribly much disposable income. Any guidance is very much appreciated.

I agree with this sentiment. If you get double the average returns in the stock market via luck or extreme skill you could make You're in the "accumulating" phase of wealth rather than the "growing" phase.

You shouldn't trade with such a small amount of money because the fees will eat it up. Build investment accounts in a Roth IRA at Vanguard or equiv. Do you have an emergency fund with month's worth of expenses saved? If so, what are you doing in the way of retirement savings? As a teacher, you may be the beneficiary of a defined pension plan or at at least you'd likely have access to a b or b.

If all's squared away there, do you have any debts? If not, what are some long savings goals that you have?

Might be worth a decent amount in 40 years. They DO have a few no-fee etf options provided by Wisdom Tree. Wisdom Tree Earnings fund. They manage it for you, and you don't have to worry about commission which eats away at returns. This way you can get a small payment every quarter or based on the companies dividend payout schedule.

Pretty solid idea, not going to argue with that. If only that was one of the free ETFs that they do offer on E-trade. True, and ETrade's commission free ETFs leave a bit to be desired. In OP's position, I'd probably just pull the money out of ETrade and regroup.

Why is investing in one company a terrible idea? I started out with direct investing by investing in 1 mutual fund and bought shares in one company I researched the heck out of.

Regardless of how much research you do on a single company's stock, investing in a single stock is akin to gambling. Yes, you may come out way ahead of the market at large or you could severely lag behind the market at large. In other words, it's a gamble whereas the market at large has a track record spanning over a hundred years.

While I personally haven't invested in a single stock in awhile, I do it on occasion, but I do that with money I wouldn't mind losing and is otherwise "fun" money. Ah absolutely in OPs case this wouldn't be a good idea. I, as you, used my "fun" money to invest in one stock. Wouldn't be surprised if this guy is a junk broker himself.
