The exhaust manifold started to leak a few years ago. Recently, the motor started to idle rough and stall, when the plow hit the snow pile, which caused the service engine light to come on. An independent garage changed the cam phaser sensors for the timing. The sensors didn't fix the problem and the service engine light came back on. The same garage was going to change the solenoids for the timing to see, if that would solve the problem.

When they took the covers off, they found a blown gasket for the small piston that applies pressure to the timing chain on the left side. The overhead cam didn't receive oil, so now the motor needs replacing. The truck has around 37, miles on it.

They took it apart and showed me the pictures it looked like a bomb went off inside. Metal scoring and shavings everywhere. Of course the warranty does not cover it because i didnt use "Motorcraft" oil filter that supposedly starved the phasers of oil.

Finally at about 24, miles, they found the issue shifting solenoid and fixed it but about 8 months later same issue occurred again. Two weeks after fixing it the second time, I traded the car in and bought a new car outside the Ford brand.

Mine is similar, I bought my F brand new and my first problem was the throttle body needing replacement around 25, miles. Then the motor over time has been sounding more and more like a diesel. When turning certain corners the truck wants to die also. I took it to the Ford dealer and they replaced the spark plugs and coil packs. I asked them about the knocking and they mentioned that this was normal and that my truck would have to have the Cam Sensors replaced. So we left the dealer and halfway home the truck dies at a stoplight, so we turned around and went back to dealer. Long story short, the dealer kept fixing and replacing parts thankfully at no cost to me for about 2 months on and off.

The ford trucks with the 5. First is the 2 piece oil pump that comes apart and dosent send oil to top of motor where cams are located causing it to jump time. They also have issues with the throttle body which after a short time drops down to about rpms. This will not let enough oil flow to top of motor causing it to jump time as well. This truck has had oil changed every miles with the recommended oil.

Sounds like a diesel. Also only used 5W20 oil but now I run amsoil 0W30 just trying to make it quiter it pumps up to the heads quicker and don't thin out as much at operating temps! Went from tapping noise after first spark plug change, was told that it was normal with the new spark plugs and was charged for each spark plug that they broke taking them out.

I have a 04 f 4x 4 lariat with miles and I got it used with miles and after putting miles had to have the vct solenoids changed twice now at I have to change the vct solenoids again this time it is worse the engine misfires and shutters and dies when coming to a stop.

Also this engine has another engineering flaw the spark plugs will snap in half when removing them. I have been working on cars since and am a die hard ford guy and ford should do some thing to help us customer to have kept them I business but since no one has died because of this defect it is not a recall. Recently the truck started to stall at low rmps. Was told it was vct celeniod, replaced both and the truck will start but the engine shakes and acts like its out of time. Re-set the ecm, have no oil pressure. I think the motor is shot. The only thing that's positive about this is the truck is payed for. It will set until I can afford another motor. If I want to take the risk of put any more money into it. Purchased March 1, with 72k miles.

Since purchasing the vehicle it has spent around 8 months in the shop non consecutive. Had to have the transmission replaced 2 months after I purchased the truck I never towed with it. Had to have the motor replaced because of the spark plug issue. Had to have the second motor replaced because the cam phasers went out. Had the transmission replaced again-the owner of the shop said it looked like a bomb went off in the transmission and that was barely recognizable as a transmission anymore.

Had to have the motor replaced a third time because of the cam phasers. Now the temp gauges is no longer working and the truck is having issues shifting. After reading the codes and replacing the cht sensor didn't fix issue and cht sensor connector didn't fix issue I've figured out I need a flash up date for my pcm. I have a Expedition Eddie Bauer and have replaced the plugs and replaced the coils many times only to continue to have the hesitation problem.

Nothing I do seems to last. I purchased a 5. I had several engine problems throughout ownership. With two payments left the engine was deemed in need of replacement.

Now starting to"backfire" when decelerating. These 3 valve triton engines are an embarrassment. It's an even bigger embarrassment that Ford won't be held responsible. They know and don't care that they're screwing civilians over, the majority being reguler blue collar American workers like myself. Currently dealing with the infamous VCT and Cam problems along with ingenious "2 piece" spark plugs that are seized on and are known to break off in pieces. Must have a new motor at my expense.

I replaced the motor with a motorcraft crate motor in after it was out of warranty. Still have the same issues. Love the truck-hate the power plant. Truck currently has K miles on it and it is have more acceleration problem again. As it happens intermittently, no one can nail down the exact problem. Vehicle had had idle problems when warm, sounded like a diesel, and died several times in traffic. Replaced Cam Phasers, tensioners, timing chain and VCT Solenoids twice. Changed oil pump this last time to an aftermarket pump.

Truck no longer stalls, but does still sound and run bad on occasion. This vehicle is not reliable and not safe! I live, work, and play in the Nevada desert - and I know that eventually this vehicle WILL leave me stranded!

Problems started at 80K miles and I have nursed it along to K. I will probably need a new engine within the next 20k miles as the heads and cams do show signs of scoring. I bought a 04 f from Joe Cooper Ford in Shawnee Oklahoma after without them telling me that issues on it. I'm also having cam phaser issues. I was driving on the interstate with my wife and kids. My check engine light came on, then the oil pressure gauge went to zero and back to the normal position. After that, the check gauges light came on. My ford expedition, lost power, shuddered and died, while driving. A trailing eighteen wheeler just missed us by a few feet.

I can't afford to fix it, and I'm just so glad it hasn't blown up on me already. I can't trade it in, because I can't get anything for it. Because it constantly knocks.

Ford should do a recall, and replace all 5. I have heard nothing but good things about them. My F XLT for the most part has been performing well. The only issue I've had is the check battery light. It goes on and off randomly. My shop can't figure out why. I have no idea what a lot of the complaints on this page are about.

What shocked me was the dealership was surprised and indicated this happens to this engine. Hmm seems it should have been a recall item. I have a F k purchase new from Sawgrass ford at 80k lots of valve noise that led to the cams replacement, lots of other issues brakes locking, plugs broken in head etc.

I have a F with a 5. It started to cold knock around 20k miles. I had it to the dealer several times and they changed the oil and basically said there is nothing they can do. They also stated that many of them knock like that and that it will run for many more thousands of miles. The truck also developed a shimmy under load and will backfire and hesitate at times. Oil has always been changed at appropriate intervals and I have all service records.

The engine has a terrible rough idle and sounds like a diesel. Its been doing this for the last 5 years. I had the VMT solenoids replaced, cleaned the throttle body, etc. FORD states they "can't find the issue described" every time I take it in for this after dropping hundreds of dollars at it.

But as soon as I take it in for a oil change, they state rough idle. This engine is poorly engineered with numerous flaws and they know it. Engine starts and sounds like it's down a few quarts then warms up and is fine, but engine oil is within acceptable tolerances per the dipstick.

Had to replace the plugs at 95k miles and quite a few broke dealer and then replaced all of the coils for the plugs. I have a and my engine has been ticking since I got my truck. I need to know what Ford will do about it. At k Ford says these engines are prone to breaking down. Told all we had to do is put a new engine in it.

We have replaced coils before. A new engine at K mikes? I don't think so. I also have a XLT 5. I brought it in used with 63, miles on it. I love this truck,first truck and first Ford. I replaced the manifold that had rust and holes in it, At least eight bolt heads had broken off. The exhaust also had to be replaced because of rust. Five days later it's shaking and tattling like crazy,so back to the shop.

After four days mechanic calls you need a NEW engine. It's a shame when a company as big as Ford and other American companies don't care about their customers concerns or safety.
